The Flaming Stars - Songs From The Bar Room Floor (1995) - Review

The Flaming Stars - Songs From The Bar Room Floor - (1995) - Cover

Downbeat without breaks (4/5)

From the opening crashing lo-fi riff, you know you're in for something special. A twisted ride of hip London cool mangled through the sonic tricks of any number of famous grunge artists. The Velvets, Stooges, JAMC, Tom Waits to name but a few of the people who leave echoes throughout, as well as the more obscure traces of hip Tarantinoesque, soundtrack soundscapes and swinging Carnaby Street modism.

At times gloriously downbeat, at others happier than pig man in hog heaven. At no point does this album lapse into pure noisy abandonment. The whole experience is held together by some of the most fluid and catchy song writing this side of the universe, and enough catchy riffs to sink the royal naval gazer! Why are you even reading this, you should be listening, BEGONE!!! [Oh my God - Did I actually write that last line? It was a good few years ago... Dio 2006]
