The New York Dolls hadn't featured on this blog yet, but would have at some point. I had hoped to feature a classic performance or an old show reel or something of historical interest. I'm disappointed to say that I won't be featuring any old New York Dolls material in this post. Instead, a brand new track will have to suffice.
Ok, those of you who've now picked yourselves up off the floor in shock will no doubt be as surprised as I was when I just spotted this news over at Lukira's blog via BoingBoing. 32 years after their last studio album, Glam Rock's only really worthwhile band are back with a new record (at least the surviving members.) The question on all fan's lips will no doubt be, is it any good? Personally, I really like this new track, it's shot through with with the stuff that made the Dolls great and it's catchy as hell. It certainly has signs of maturity, but then again, none of us are getting any younger. See what you think - Dance Like A Monkey to the New York Dolls
When I first started trawling YouTube for stuff, I did a look for one of my all time favourite bands, Godspeed You Black Emperor. There wasn't any footage of them up at the time. I had another check this week, and low and behold, they're there now. Ok, the video's a bit poor, but the sound is superb and the you get a great look at how they fill a stage. What's more, the track is an unrecorded track called Albanian that I've never heard before now.
If you've never heard Godspeed You, then you're in for a treat. They are prehaps the closest indie music has come to classical symphony, but without any of the sterile soulessness that classical music suffers from (to me.) Long sweeping pieces that unfold over the length of an album, cinematic soundscapes, grinding power and moments of sublime dreamlike quality. They truly have it all. As they are currently on an indefinite hiatus, it's great to see this and hopefully one day they'll release another record. I hope, I hope, I hope...
Another great MC5 video that I've never seen before. This one's from some Detroit public access show featuring a funky set and sweet faced presenter. It's funny, before YouTube I'd never seen the band in any sort performance before. Now I get three at once. Let's hope some more classics like this make the transition from private archives to the world wide web.
There was a surprise in store for me as well with this video. I didn't realise it was Wayne Kramer doing the vocals. I'm guessing he does them on the bands famous Kick Out The Jams live album as well, but it was never something that had occured to me. Anyway, the band, kicking it live, rock 'n' roll theatre, pure joy, enjoy.
I have to admit I've never been into the whole Johnny Cash thing. I'm not a Country and Western fan, and he'd always been too much of that world for my tastes. However, a couple of years ago I spotted this video on MTV2 at sometime and it blew me away. What's more, I didn't know that it was also a Nine Inch Nails cover, I'm quite ignorant at times. My pal Nursey got me listening to the album American IV, The Man Comes Around, from which this track comes.
To me, there's something intrinsically melancholic about old men singing. You don't hear it often in the rock world for obvious reasons. This track is simply searing, and if the words and delivery don't get you choked up, then the added power of this stark and simple video will do the rest. There's one look in it from his wife that just cuts your soul. It's not particularly rare or off the wall, but it's a great track and I spotted it was up on the mighty tube and had to share. One of the comments sums it up for me. "Can I just nominate this video as one of those few instances, along with great war movies and the retirement of great baseball players, where it is okay for the manliest of men to well up with tears." What can I say, sad music inspires me.
Oh well, the nice Uncle Floyd clip we had earlier of Pussy Galore was pulled off YouTube (the joys of relying on third parties...) after not very long. I mentioned in the that post I was going to do a rip of their superb Dick Johnson video. It was my first exposure to the band and remains a favourite track. As I've yet got around to doing it, I was pleased to see it turn up at Video Guidance and save me the job.
The track is scratchy, noisy and exceedingly butt-shakingly catchy. The video's nice and sloppy as well. Check out the minimalist drumming approach. Enjoy the glorious noise.
