Eric B & Rakim - Eric B Is President
Bit of a genre hop here - I like to take a trip into Hip Hop land every once in a while. I fought my liking for the genre for a long time. Whilst most of my friends were break-dancing with wicked names like rubber legs and what-not, I spent most of the mid 80s with a self imposed hatred of Hip Hop. I eventually mellowed and embraced the music with a love of a few key tracks from the era. To be honest, I have quite specific tastes when it comes to Rap. A lot of modern stuff just leaves me cold and uninterested, but there are some really class acts out there in Hip Hop land, and it's high time I gave a shout out to one of my early favourites.
Eric B & Rakim's track Eric B Is President was one of those seminal rap tracks for me - I remember really listening the hell out of it as a mid teen - the mix of psychedelic scratching and reverb drenched vocals encapsulated the sort of Hip Hop that still gets me excited to this day. This live version of it is pretty interesting if a little short. It's nowhere near as epic as the recorded version, but pretty hot and well worth a listen all the same.
