Johnny Cash - Hurt Video

I have to admit I've never been into the whole Johnny Cash thing. I'm not a Country and Western fan, and he'd always been too much of that world for my tastes. However, a couple of years ago I spotted this video on MTV2 at sometime and it blew me away. What's more, I didn't know that it was also a Nine Inch Nails cover, I'm quite ignorant at times. My pal Nursey got me listening to the album American IV, The Man Comes Around, from which this track comes.

To me, there's something intrinsically melancholic about old men singing. You don't hear it often in the rock world for obvious reasons. This track is simply searing, and if the words and delivery don't get you choked up, then the added power of this stark and simple video will do the rest. There's one look in it from his wife that just cuts your soul. It's not particularly rare or off the wall, but it's a great track and I spotted it was up on the mighty tube and had to share. One of the comments sums it up for me. "Can I just nominate this video as one of those few instances, along with great war movies and the retirement of great baseball players, where it is okay for the manliest of men to well up with tears." What can I say, sad music inspires me.
